Diseases of the Skin - Keratosis Pilaris or Chicken Skin
65Diseases of the Skin Keratosis Pilaris or Chicken Skin
Keratosis Pilaris, or Chicken Skin as it is more commonly known, is characterized by red bumps around the hair follicles on the skin. It most commonly appears on the back and upper arms, but can appear in other places too. Occasionally it is on the face. The red bumps are not itchy or sore, and do not even usually bother the patient. The patient is usually only bothered by the appearance which can be quite embarrassing, especially if the rash is on the face.
Causes
The true cause of Keratosis Pilaris is unknown. Keratin is a natural protein produced by the body. Keratosis Pilaris is formed when too much Keratin is produced. The Keratin traps the hair follicles in the pore. This causes an ingrown hair which in turn causes the bumps and red rash.
People can get Keratosis Pilaris at any age, but it is more common in females and in adolescents. It is genetic, so if one of your parents have it, you are more likely to get it.

Generally the rash is worse in the winter when there is more moisture in the air, and it clears up in the summer.
Cures and Treatment
While there is no cure for Keratosis Pilaris, there is a suggested treatment. Retin-A is most frequently prescribed for this by doctors, but there are other treatments you can use at home. If you use Retin-A for a while it can become quite expensive.
Dry Brushing is a technique that releases the toxins from your skin and it can have a positive effect on Keratosis Pilaris. Or you can use soap and a body scrub sponge. It’s best to scrub your body about twice a week. If you do it more frequently you can irritate the skin problem. Then you need to use a moisturizer. One of the recommended lotions is AmLactin.
One suggestion is to use Mary Kay Timewise 3-In-1 Cleanser for Sensitive Skin and follow it with an defoliator such as Burt's Bees Citrus Scrub.
Generally make sure you are fit and healthy, drink enough water and get enough fresh air and sunshine. Watch your diet and make sure you eat as healthily as you can. Occasionally Keratosis Pilaris has been known to go away without any specific treatment.
The Future
Keratosis Pilaris never really goes away, but with care for your body you can reduce your symptoms quite a lot. And it does often reduce with age without you doing anything in particular.
