England and Scotland, Food and Customs

By

I was raised in England and was totally unaware how much information I adsorbed about that country until I moved to the United States. How to make tea, how to make Dundee Cake and other really useful information for an ex-Brit. Gradually I've been writing hubs about the country and the customs.

I'm putting all my English and Scottish hubs together in this one round up hub so that you can just browse the British hubs without having to scroll through pages of homeschooling or health hubs.

I was raised in Chester, in the North West, which is 20 miles from Liverpool. It was a Roman city and is famous for its Rows which is shopping on two levels. Many of the buildings are black and white and date from the Medieval times. So I've written three hubs about Chester, one of which is about Chester's town criers and one about the Grosvenor Museum.

Making tea and using china cups is more of a southern occupation than a northern one, but the northerners still drink a lot of tea, usually in mugs. I do know how to make the perfect cuppa.

The concept of afternoon tea was conceived by the British in India. When dinner was as late as 7pm, a cup of tea was served around 4pm with a little something to satisfy until dinner time.

Scones are often served with afternoon tea along with jam and cream. The best place to have afternoon tea in England is at a National Trust property.

York, like Chester, was also a Roman City and has city walls. It was invaded by the Vikings and has many interesting name places including Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma Gate. I recently spent two days there and wish I could have been there for longer.

Port Sunlight is what's known as a Model Village and is full of black and white buildings. You have to read this hub, it's not very long, but it's full of great photographs.

Traveling to England is no easy job with all the electronics I take. For the casual visitor I have written this detailed explanation of the items I took and some helpful comments on each.

Just north of the border is Scotland, a land full of great scenery and proud people. Scotland has some great history and I wrote about some of it in the following hub.

Christmas to me means Dundee Cake. When I lived in England I made one every year, and the photographs you see were cakes I made.

    • Getting Rid of Emotional Baggage

Ever seen someone with too much baggage? It’s heavy and difficult to carry. Emotional baggage is like that too, no one can see it, but you are slowed down when you carry too much. Often you are the only one who knows it is there. Suddenly... - 7 months ago
