How to Organize Your Homeschool

By TinaAtHome

Homeschooling is not easy in a disorganized, messy environment so here are some hints on organizing your life and your homeschool. Internet homeschools are growing in popularity, consider using the computer more and books less. You can’t have a messy pile of books if all the books you read are on Kindle!

Housework

If you give a preschooler a squirt bottle and a cloth it’s amazing how much of the bathroom they can clean, and it keeps them occupied for a long time too. Have a small vacuum cleaner that is the right height so children can use it. For windows, use microfiber cloths, one wet and one dry (with just water) and send 2 children around the house together with a microfiber cloth each.

Schedule your day for the things you want to achieve, if you don’t plan to do your housework, it won’t get done.

Laundry

Children from the age of 10-12 are fully capable of doing their own laundry. You are educating them for life, not just the academics.

Buy enough clothes so they are not running out all the time as that just adds to your stress.

Shopping

Most things can now be bought online, this saves a lot of time for the busy mom. I buy most of what I want on eBay and Amazon. I have amazon Prime, so I can get a lot of things with 2 days shipping, and eBay is definitely the cheapest place to buy anything.

Meal planning

Teach your children to cook meals, make that a part of your homeschool and eventually the burden will be eased off you.

Consider using supermarket delivery, many of them offer free delivery if you order over a certain amount and the prices are the same as in the store.

Make packed lunches the night before. Moms do it when their children are in school. Then their lunches are made and you don’t have to stop for a long lunch break to cook and eat, they can get their lunches out of the fridge and it makes for a shorter break at lunch time.

Look after Yourself

Give yourself a break. Treat yourself, you deserve it. Use extended family if you can and babysitters otherwise.

Keep your Marriage Alive

Have a date night regularly. Take care of your relationship and the relationship of those close to you.

Dr and Dentist Appointments

Schedule Dr & dentist appointments late in the day or on a Friday

Life is crazy, but each year is different, children grow and change at an alarming rate, what is a problem one year isn’t a problem another year

I homeschool 5 and they are all expected to chip in with household chores. Younger ones can definitely sort laundry, by 9 or so, they can start the washer, move it to the dryer, and everyone helps fold and put away. Each child is assigned a day that they are mommy's "helper," that child helps prepare meals with me, etc. Children love to be involved and feel like they're contributing. As for the homeschooling ... the best thing I did was to get each of them a plastic milk crate, they turn it on its side and stack them, these are their cubbies. Every child is expected to keep his/her school supplies in their cubby and they can not be used outside of school. Nothing more frustrating than not having the necessary supplies just as we begin class. They now know exactly where their colors, pencils, markers, etc. are. Homeschooling requires organization. Thanks so much for this hub!

Good job! Organization is helpful...I homeschool a crew, so laundry and cleaning are necessary chores for those capable of helping, in order to keep things running smoothly!

As a home school mom who graduated two students from high school, I fully understand the daily trials home school moms go through. My favorite course was Independent Living Skills, where I taught my children to clean, cook, and sew. My daughter didn't mind too much, but my son thought it was awful, until he married a girl that didn't know how to cook or sew. Then he was grateful. Life skills are important, regardless the child's gender. I enjoyed your hub!
