How to Succeed at an Online School

Assuming that you have your place in the online school of your choice, now the question is, how do you motivate yourself and succeed with your studying to earn your degree? Distance learning is different from traditional college. You will probably never meet your teacher or classmates, you need to be pro-active if you want a social life, it won’t just happen. You may be home alone, or interrupted by family and friends who think that just because you are home, you are available. Here are a few tips about how to make online school work for you.

Start the day well. Don’t roll out of bed in your pajamas and half start working. Don’t lie in bed all morning and expect your work will do itself. Get up and dressed as if you were going out the house. Set the alarm, have breakfast, rush if you need to.

Schedule your day. Start at the same time every day, plan a break for lunch, and other regular breaks through the day. Have a fixed time when you stop studying. Plan exercise into your daily schedule.

Structure your time. If you were in a physical college you would have one class followed by a different class. Structure your classes as if you were in college and change the subjects you are studying hourly.

Have a social life. Don’t stay home all the time, keep your friends, go out and make new friends and keep in contact with your friends regularly.

Set goals. Plan what you will achieve and when, work extra time if you are falling behind your plan.

Keep a calendar. Know what assignments are due when and don’t miss the deadlines. Write your plan so that you finish the assignments well before the due date so that you are not staying up all night the day before an assignment is due.

Know your best time of day to study. Are you a morning person or an evening person? You can schedule your time to work when you are most alert. This is a huge advantage that online schools have over regular schools.

Have a consistent place to work. Don’t wonder to the local coffee shop one day, the library the next and study on the sofa the next. Have a desk that is the place where you always work, then you will know when you sit there then you should be studying.

Tell people what you are doing. Tell your friends that even though you are at home, you are not available between certain hours. If someone does come and call, turn them away. Leave the phone to go to voice mail when it rings.

Join a study group. Meet locally with people who are studying similar subjects to you.

Don’t get sidetracked. When it is time for you to study, then do just that. Don’t get sidetracked by checking your email and online contacts, wait for your scheduled break to do that.

Take breaks. Plan a day off, or a half day and do something you love. When you return to studying you will feel more refreshed.

Ask questions. Don’t sit and get stuck in silence, you have paid your tutors, use them to help you understand what you need to know.

Reward yourself. When you reach a milestone give yourself a reward, just make sure it’s not always chocolate!

Online courses have the flexibility to be ideal for the self-motivated student.

Remember learning takes a long time, you can’t earn a good degree quickly.
