Plane Crash Caused By Crocodile, 19 Dead
62August 25, 2010
A plane carrying 20 passengers and crew crashed because a crocodile was smuggled onto the plane by one of the passengers. When the crocodile escaped from the bag where it had been hidden, the passengers stampeded and the plane crashed into an empty house killing all but one of the 20 people on board. It crashed just a few hundred feet from its final destination.
The plane was traveling from Kinshasa, to Bandundu, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, in Central Africa, when the passengers suddenly saw the crocodile running inside the plane. They all rushed to one side of the plane, which caused it to go into a spin and crash.
The crocodile survived the crash along with one person, but as soon as they were on the ground, one of the rescuers killed the crocodile with a machete.
The pilot was Belgian and the co-pilot was British. The plane was a Czech-made Let L-410 Turbolet, and owned by the Belgian pilot.
The plane crashed August 25, 2010 but the news about the possible cause was only released October 22, 2010.
It doesn't say in any news report how big the crocodile was reported to be.
Apparently smuggling live crocodiles on planes is not uncommon in Africa, as their skins are worth a lot of money, but this is the first reported crash due to having a crocodile on board.
Some reports way 19 were killed, and some say 20.
I guess Africa's security when boarding a plane isn't as strict as it is in the US.

Transporting crocodiles on planes is not as unusual as you think
- Crocodiles on a Plane | The Weekly Standard
Flying is cheap [in the Congo], all things considered. Truth be known, it requires no government, and very little infrastructure. You can scrape out a runway anywhere, and do it practically overnight.
This is what the inside of the plane looks like from Kinshasa to Bandundu
- Article from Vanity Fair
With only 300 miles of paved roads, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (a country roughly the size of Western Europe) is dependent on its aircraft, regardless of the planes safety records or sturdiness.

Thanks for informing us about the greed and sad crash of an aeroplane.I think security should be tight and no live animal or insect should be allowed to travel with the passenger.I voted you up.

so snakes on a plane aren't really as far fetched as people thought it was
Good grief! I was really looking for a punch line, thinking this must be an urban legend or a joke. Guess not. Can't think of anything else to say about someone's obvious selfishness and stupidity, but what a shame.
Can you believe that someone actually smuggled an alligator on board a plane??? It's s sad that people died because of someone's greed and stupidity.
