Best Games for Family Game Night
61Games are very good for having fun together as a family. They are also educational for the children. The reason they are so good is because children are learning and they don’t realize they are learning because it is so enjoyable. They also have a certain part that is luck, and so younger members of the family feel they have an even chance.
After we've played a game we often remember the fun times and some of what was said becomes a family joke, then someone quotes the line and we all laugh again.
As a homeschool family we play many games, and here are some of my favorites.
Most of these games are for ages 8-10 and up.
If you have a favorite, please let me know and I’ll try it out and add it to the list.
I know many children prefer video games, but board games and family games have a sense of togetherness that help bond a family.
Blurt
You read a description of a common object from a card and someone else has to “Blurt” the answer. The game is suitable for all ages and can get very fast paced and the participants can get very excited. For 3 or more players.
Apples to Apples
One card is picked and then everyone has to find a card in their hand that best describes the first card. Then a judge decides what the best description is. Even if you don’t have a good card, you have to play and this is what creates the laughter and the “Who put that down?” comment. It says for ages 12 and up, but my children have played it since they were 8. It’s meant to be for 3 players or more, but 2 of my children will play it and run to me to be the judge while I’m doing something else.
Buzz Word
This game is easy to start playing and can be played with any age. It would be perfect for a group of teens or young adults as some of the clues are a little difficult for younger children. It can be played with 3 or 4 people, but it’s more fun if played with a larger group in two teams. You start with a word and then all the answers to the clues have to have that word in them. You have a timer and have to come up with an answer before it runs out.
Such and Such
The answers to the clues come in twos. This is similar to Buzz Word except all the answers come in pairs, like salt and pepper, oranges and lemons. You are competing against a timer, so you have to think fast. This is for older children or young adults.
Likewise
Everyone writes an answer and if the answers match, you score. A party game for 12 and up. It helps to know the people you are playing with, but it’s also good as an ice breaker. It’s very easy to get started playing.
Tip of the Tongue
You need to answer lots of trivia questions in less than 2 seconds to win at this game. It’s funny because people try so hard to get the right answer quickly that they give silly answers and everyone ends up laughing a lot. It’s not a game for slow thinkers.
Stare
You stare at an image for 20 seconds and then try to remember the details of that picture. You can play individually or in teams. The minus is that there are questions and no answers. There is a junior game too.
Cranium
This game includes acting, drawing, sculpting, trivia. It’s a mixture of lots of other games, but still it is a lot of fun and will create great family memories. It’s better with more people.
Pictionary
You are given a word and you have to draw it so your team members guess what you are drawing, it’s all done against the timer. This works well in two teams. There is a Pictionary Junior, but we usually play the regular game with our children and just give them a bit of help.
